The future of Vintage cars

Blog: The Electrification of Vintage Gems

WHY electric 'Vintage'?

  • It may well be the ONLY future for Vintage Cars.
  • Style. For the enthusiasts, driving a vintage vehicle may be preferred transport.
  • Working on a less-sophisticated ICE car, can be easier than a computer controlled one.
  • Vehicles with a chassis, back axle and prop shaft can be converted easily, notwithstanding a sound knowledge of DC electric and wiring connections.
  • We are not wishing to enter into drag racing, we just want driving economy.
  • Vintage conversion offers zero Road Tax, no MOT, low insurance.
  • The EV range requirements are compatible with current Vintage Runs and use.
  • Spares for Vintage are becoming limited.
  • Example: Two Austins

The seven has been popular to convert to hillclimb, racing and specials since the 30’s. It’s a small compact car with lovely character - that fact still remains because how can anyone tell??.

Perhaps the back seat has to be sacrificed to house the battery packs, but the thin 19” wheels and tyres offer less rad resistance and being so lightweight, a small 10-15 hp motor should be able to hook directly onto the prop’ shaft.

The 10 is very well suited to conversion. Being a very well built solid four door offers lots of engine bay space and superior weigh handling. The 1100cc engine alone could easily outweigh the comparable electric motor. Again siting the batteries may well be a compromise, but the weight of batteries can easily be accommodated.

There are two on-going projects, one with a 1933 RP seven and one with a chrome radiator 1993 saloon. See the blog immortal-gems.co.uk.
